Global Scholar: An Unforeseen Journey

By:
Anthony Lenski

My name is Anthony Lenski and I am in my final semester at the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh. I will be graduating  with a Bachlor of Business Administration degree in Marketing with an International Management emphasis, Bachelor of Arts degree in German as well as the Global Scholar designation.  Currently, I am the Marketing & Events intern at Appleton Harley-Davidson. During my free time, I am most likely indulging in the philosophical works of Friedrich Nietzsche, reading about the legendary Spartans of Ancient Greece, binge watching Lord of the Rings, listening to my favorite albums on vinyl, hanging out with my cat, Orion, or out riding my Harley.

At a very early age, my grandfather would speak to me in German but never really thought anything of it. Over the years, I learned through him that my family has a very strong German heritage. Following my freshman year at the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh, I knew that a marketing degree alone would not be sufficient and needed a way to differentiate myself if I wanted to greatly increase my changes of getting a job in my field after graduation. Our world has become far more connected on a global scale than ever before and it is becoming increasingly crucial to think beyond our own borders. These are the factors that lead me to become a global scholar. In honor of my ancestors who had come from Germany, I decided to study the German language. Upon taking my first German course, this ignited my passion for the language. Every German course I had taken therein after further enriched that passion. However, only studying the German language in my home country would only take me so far. Fortunately through my study abroad advisor, Frau Wade, and the staff at the Office of International Education in particular, Emily Hoffmann, I was presented the opportunity of a lifetime to go to Germany. I went to Germany on a full academic year exchange program. The College of Business at UW Oshkosh has a direct partnership with the Hochschule in Osnabrück.

The goals of this ePortfolio are to convey my experiences as a Global Scholar and signify how it has a made a life-long impact on me. These will be demonstrated through three different aspects of this ePortfolio: The Experience which explain in greater detail my time in Germany, Impact regarding how the experience has affected on me and Aspirations referring to what I intend to do with my future.
